Addressing inaccurate reporting, incorrect statements and \u201cfalse balance\u201d, the guidelines underscore the importance of getting your story straight on climate change and sustainability. <\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21276 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.strattoncraig.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Balance-1.jpg\" alt=\"Stones balancing against ocean view\" width=\"403\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.strattoncraig.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Balance-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.strattoncraig.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Balance-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.strattoncraig.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Balance-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.strattoncraig.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Balance-1-640x427.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 639px) 98vw, (max-width: 1199px) 64vw, 403px\" \/><br \/>\nImpartiality is a core guiding principle in quality journalism. But sometimes writers and broadcasters go too far in their bid for objectivity and balance. In the last year, the BBC has had to issue several apologies for its climate change coverage, including an interview with climate change denier Nigel Lawson.<br \/>\nDuring the Lawson interview, the BBC\u2019s failure to challenge claims that global temperatures have not risen in the past decade was deemed to have breached its own guidelines on accuracy and impartiality.<br \/>\nAcknowledging that \u201cwe get it wrong on climate change too often\u201d, the BBC\u2019s new guidelines aim to put things right. While accepting that the dissenting voices of \u201csceptics and contrarians\u201d should be included in the debate, the Corporation warns against \u201cfalse balance\u201d, claiming that \u201cto achieve impartiality, you do not need to include outright deniers of climate change\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Accuracy, fact and fake news<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The BBC\u2019s line of argument builds on an earlier report into climate coverage which proposed that \u201cthe weight of evidence no longer justifies equal space being given to the opponents of the consensus\u201d.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21277 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.strattoncraig.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Flood-plain-1.jpg\" alt=\"Cracked, parched earth in foreground, dramatic clouds in background\" width=\"390\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.strattoncraig.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Flood-plain-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.strattoncraig.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Flood-plain-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.strattoncraig.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Flood-plain-1-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.strattoncraig.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Flood-plain-1-640x426.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 639px) 98vw, (max-width: 1199px) 64vw, 390px\" \/>In other words, the pursuit of impartiality should not compromise accuracy, and \u201c<u>due<\/u> impartiality\u201d, rather than equal weight, should be the guiding light in such cases. In journalism, as in general comms and corporate reporting, narratives need to be underpinned by fact. And when it comes to \u2018hot topics\u2019 like climate change, it\u2019s essential to distinguish between fact and belief \u2013 particularly in the post-truth era.<br \/>\nThe problem is, the truth is a construct. Firmly held beliefs, as in the case of Nigel Lawson and, more recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.strattoncraig.com\/insight\/honestly-mistaken-tsb-paul-pester-and-trust-in-a-world-of-selective-truth\/\">TSB&#8217;s Paul Pester<\/a>, are all too often presented as truth, even if factually inaccurate.<br \/>\nThis muddying of the waters only serves to deepen concerns over \u2018fake news\u2019, which has done so much to demolish public trust in media institutions and outputs.
